Geographicaly, this mountain is the only volcanic mountain active in East Africa, furthermore it is the only volcanic mountain in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava rich in rare sodium and potassium carbonate minerals that cause the temperature of it's erupting lava to have relatively low temperature to a point that its molten lava would appear black in daylight unlike the common lava that would appear red, Having producing a cool lava is unusual among the rest of volcano produced around the world.

The maasai people believe their prayers are answered from this mountai, so every now and then they would go to this mountain to pray to the gods.

Near the mountain there is a shallow soda Lake called Natron that has very high concentration of salt and some minerals.
