Mwanza is Tanzania's second largest city in the Northwest of the country after Dar es Salaam. It is a mid-sized port city in the Southern shores of lake Victoria. The Mwanza Region is occupied by various tribal groups, including the Wasukuma, the Wakerewe, Wakara and Wazinza however the Wasukuma out number the rest for about 90 percent as they are the native tribe of Mwanza.

Where to Go 

+Rubondo Island

Rubondo Island National Park was gazetted in 1977. It is an important breeding ground for both migratory birds and fish species (especially Tilapia and Nile perch) as for a long time it stood to be the only area in the waters of Lake Victoria which was well protected and preserved.

 

Park attractions

  • A variety of water birds , Eurasian migrants and introduced African grey parrots

  • High density of African fish eagles distinctly seen

  • Animal species including Sitatunga, Elephants, Giraffes, Hippos, Bushbucks, Pythons, Crocodiles, Chimpanzees (not fully habituated), Bush pigs and Suni

  • The Lake Victoria forming a spectacular sight for visitors with the deepest point in the lake (Irumo) forming part of the park

  • Magnificent view of one of the last remaining representatives of evergreen dense primary lowland Congolese forest with a unique habitat mosaic in the midst of high biodiversity value

  • Beautiful and attracting beaches such as Fly catcher, Mchangani and Michicoco

  • Important gulfs of Irumo and Kamea

  • Clear sighting of both sun rise and sun set

  • Cultural sites such as “Ntungamirwe”, “Maji Matakatifu”, “Altare” and “Solo” which explain the life of natives who once stayed in the park

+ Serengeti National Park

 

The serengeti is not in Mwanza actually, however it can easily be reached from here as well, only about 2 hours drive of getting there.

 

Serengeti is the largest and probably the most popular park of Tanzania and Africa in general complimented with it's over 2 million wildebeest annual migration.

+Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Center

 

Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the first prime minister and president of Tanzania who built himself a good reputation worldwide by his deeds. 
 
His legacy still lives on and some of his memory are preserved in the Mwalimu Nyerere Museum Center that was opened in july 1999 which he himself attended the opening ceremony before he died in same year october. 
 
The museum is located in Butiama village, a birth and burial place of Mwalimu. about three hours drive from Mwanza.
